The Book of Fate…

I ran across this posted on-line this morning. Looks like the first wave of Masonic books are starting to hit the shore and this forerunner comes with its own on-line game (which told me I was a 33rd degree!) to test and tease your Masonic Knowledge. “The Book of Fate” is written by Brad Meltzer and published by Warner Books. Filed under the Mystery/Thriller section is it described as:

“A dark conspiracy and a 200-year-old secret add up to the most fast-paced, explosive thriller yet from “New York Times” bestselling author Meltzer.”

Who knew there were so many dark conspiracies about Freemasonry?

The longer description actually includes a mention of Freemasonry where it says:

“…Trying to figure out what really happened takes Wes back to a decade-old presidential crossword puzzle, mysterious facts buried in Masonic history, and a two-hundred-year-old code invented by Thomas Jefferson”.

Wait, Jefferson wasn’t even a Freemason???

I’m curious, why has Freemasonry become such the darling of Hollywood to beat up on in most media that depict them? My guess is that maybe the film industry is just tapping the paranoia that the sub-culture is expressing, and using that cue, writing elaborate fictions to get the rest of us on board. You know the usual spooks: the Trilateral Commission, NWO-er’s, Bohemian Grove, etc., etc., etc…. It’s surprising to me in some ways, but disappointing in many others.

The game I mentioned above for the book actually throws some clues out saying that Washington based the U.S. Capitol’s design on a pentagram, and that there are street angles that form squares and compasses. If you’ve read anything about Freemasonry on-line, you’ve seen these stories, but now “Pop” culture is picking up on them to weave into mainstream entertainment.

The problem I see here is that as these things become more prevalent on Television, in movies and in books, people will really start to believe it and forget what the fraternity is about.

The counter argument to this is that intelligent people know that nothing you see on TV is real. But my rebuttal is that just like selling soap, the more the FALSE message is presented, the more people base their understanding of Freemasonry on it.

This may just be a precursor to the hoopla over Dan Brown’s next book, but remember, Fox has a new show that went so far as to include the square and compass in its opening title credit.

Is it harmless publicity? After bad press is better than no press, right? What do you think?

  1. Frankly, the Hollywood pop culture view of Freemasonry is much more interesting and exciting than what Masonry has actually become in the US and Canada, an old man’s coffee and donut club.

I know, I know… we’re really a noble order of kindly knights serving our fellow man, but still… Masonry has become an old man’s coffee and donut club.

The sad truth is, outstanding young men are joining the Fraternity searching for the excitement and brotherhood that is presented in the books, movies and TV shows… but finding nothing like it when they join. I get email all the time from new brothers from all over the country — not just the still-racist South — who are disappointed and often disgusted by what they’ve found behind the Tyled Door.

    Widow’s Son

  2. Actually this is a good time for us younger men to modernize the Masonry a bit. Sense the worst generation, err baby boomers, are mostly absent, our generation will have an unusually large impact.

    That’s it in a nutshell, I think.

  4. If I were you I would look at the sudden interest in the Freemasonary as a positive thing. Since 911 everyone is searching for meaning. The Brotherhood is an organization reaching far in history with a level of truth that many search for. The Alchemical study of the universe, religious and moral secrets we as human hide from ourselves. The unified principles of it all. This is a great day for the Brotherhood. Mankinds return the God.
